The “wellness” trend strikes again… Met Gala 2021… Addison Rae signs Netflix film deal… Hollywood babies… and Dancing with the Stars season 30 cast
Does anyone watch beauty pageants anymore? The Miss America pageant has a new idea that is sure to bring in millions of viewers. The pageant issued a statement saying, “Miss America is pivoting their mission to define women’s wellness as being based on optimal health, rather than physical appearance.” What that means is anybody’s guess at this point. But Miss America did ditch the swimsuit competition in 2018, which they bragged about in the new press release. They said eliminating the swimsuit competition “created an opportunity for us to redefine women’s wellness and what it means to be a great woman today in modern America.” The next Miss America pageant is set for December.
The Met Gala is typically held in May, but Covid caused them to cancel last year. This year, they not only postponed the Gala, they’re breaking it up into two parts. The first event is this Monday, Sept. 13, and the second is on May 2 of next year. The theme of Monday’s event is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” According to this article I found, attendees’ fashion will be a take on a “modern vocabulary of American style.” The theme of May’s event is titled “America: An Anthology of Fashion,” and attendees “will present narratives that explore the development of American fashion.” What the heck does all this even mean??? We haven’t gotten the full list of attendees yet, but so far we know that co-chairs Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman and Naomi Osaka will be there, as well as honorary chairs Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri and Anna Wintour. We’ll probably see the usual faces — Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Kim Kardashian. Reportedly, TikTok star Addison Rae and YouTuber Emma Chamberlain are on the guest list, as well.
Speaking of Addison Rae, she made the big jump from TikTok to starring in Netflix’s “He’s All That.” Make fun of her acting abilities all you want, but Netflix estimates more than 55M US households tuned in within its first month of release and the movie reached #1 in 78 countries. Because of that, Netflix has signed Addison to a multi-picture deal, plus she will executive produce any new project she brings to Netflix.
In celebrity baby news, after going through a very public fertility struggle, E!’s Jason Kennedy and his wife Lauren Scruggs are expecting their first child next spring. A lot of time, fertility struggles drive couples apart, but Jason and Lauren said their journey brought them closer together. And Jennifer Lawrence and her art gallery owner husband Cooke Maroney are expecting their first child together.
“Dancing With the Stars” is back for its 30th season on Sept. 20. “Good Morning America” had the honor of announcing the full cast of celebrity dancers. We already knew about the two youngest competitors, Olympian Suni Lee and JoJo Siwa, both 18. Rumors about former Bachelor Matt James, Lori Loughlin and Mossimo’s daughter Olivia Jade, “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kenya Moore and former Rockette turned co-host of “The Talk” Amanda Kloots being on the show were all true. They’ll be joined by Mel C — aka Sporty Spice from the Spice Girls, country singer Jimmie Allen, “Bling Empire” star Christine Chiu, Melora Hardin, who most famously played Jan on “The Office,” profession wrestler The Mix, Peloton cycling director Cody Rigsby, “The Karate Kid” and “Cobra Kai” star Martin Kove, NBA star Iman Shumpert, and Brian Austin Green, who will be paired with his real-life girlfriend, Sharna Burgess.
