Weekend box office news… Michael Jackson’s accusers get trials… Selena & Bella’s Insta drama… Scooter Braun is frustrated… and Kanye West performs during Sunday Service
Maybe this is the final nail in the coffin for movie reboots. The latest version “Charlie’s Angels” — written and directed by Elizabeth Banks and starring the effervescent Kristen Stewart — bombed big time on its opening weekend. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics gave it a 60% positive rating, but the audiences liked it even more with 81% positive reviews. Maybe word of mouth will boost the box office next weekend. The number one movie was the new “Ford v. Ferrari” starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale. Critics and audiences love it. CinemaScore gave it a rare A+. That one earned $31M. Second place with to “Midway,” earning another $8.8M in its second weekend. Third place was the new “Charlie’s Angels” with $8.6M.
Wade Robson and James Safechuck are going to have another day in court. In the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland,” both men claimed that when they were children, they were abused for several years by Michael Jackson. In 1993, James gave sworn testimony that he hadn’t been molested by Michael. In 2005, Wade testified that he hadn’t been molested, either. But both men said they were under the spell of Michael when they made those claims, and they filed lawsuits against Michael’s estate in 2017. Those lawsuits were dismissed, partially because of the statute of limitations expiring. Both of them appealed and their cases have been stuck in appellate court….until now….A new California law has extended the statute of limitations, and the California Court of Appeals tentatively overturned Wade and James’ rulings. They will now be able to present their cases to a jury this week.
Selena Gomez is in a much better place now. Putting pettiness behind her, she started following Bella Hadid again on Instagram. Remember, after The Weeknd broke up with Bella, he dated Selena. Then he and Selena broke up, and The Weeknd went back to Bella. But now they’re broken up again. It’s a hot mess. But Selena believes in the power of Sisterhood, so she followed Bella. Bella, however, has not returned the follow. Then on Friday, Bella posted a photo of herself looking into a mirror. Selena liked it and commented “Stunning” with a heart eyes emoji. Bella deleted the post. Was that shade? Someone brought the deletion to Selena’s attention and she commented, “That sucks” with a crying emoji.
Scooter Braun had to shut down his office in Nashville on Friday because Taylor Swift’s fans were leaving threatening messages for the employees. Taylor claims Scooter and Scott Borcheta are keeping her from performing her old music on the AMA’s and blocking a Netflix documentary from using any of her old songs and performance footage. Big Machine denied those claims and issued a statement saying as much, throwing in the added tidbit that Taylor owes them millions. Taylor’s rep takes issue with that, saying their statement was carefully worded and that they can, in fact, block Taylor from using the music they own. And the rep said the fact is, Taylor doesn’t owe Big Machine any money…they owe Taylor almost $8M in unpaid royalties! Meantime, E! News has a source that says Scooter is completely frustrated with the whole situation and how Scott Borchetta has been handling it. Scooter doesn’t run Big Machine Records. He just has a financial stake in the company. He’s actually been messaging Taylor’s fans, who’ve been posting screenshots of his DMs. Scooter says he’d like the fans’ help in convincing Taylor to call him back. Apparently, he’s willing to sell Taylor her music catalogue if she would just call him back.
Speaking at Joel Osteen’s megachurch in Houston yesterday, Kanye West told the audience, “I know that God has been calling me for a long time and the devil has been distracting me for a long time.” He said, “The devil stole all the good producers. The devil stole all the good musicians, all the good artists, all the good designers, all the good businesspeople, and said, ‘You’ve got to come work for me.’” But Kanye said, “The greatest artist that God ever created is now working for him.” (Kanye is talking about himself, in case that wasn’t obvious.) Kanye also said he’s been pressured to be quiet about his religious beliefs, and that people keep telling him that superstars shouldn’t speak openly about Jesus. But Kanye said, “The only superstar is Jesus.”
