Weekend box office news… AOTY nomination removed… Tom Holland will play Fred Astaire… Dwayne Johnson joined Fortnite… and Tristan Thompson’s alleged baby mama has given birth
It was a SLOOOOOOW weekend at the box office. With no new releases to get excited about, Disney’s “Encanto” remained number one, taking in another $12.38M in its second weekend of release. The movie will be available to stream on Disney+ after playing exclusively in theaters for 30 days. Coming in second again was “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” with another $10.35M. Third place belongs to “House of Gucci” with $6.77M. Things will hopefully pick back up this weekend when Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” hits theaters on Friday. And then a week from this Friday we finally get to see “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Grammy nominations were announced while we were out for Thanksgiving, so we didn’t get to dissect some of the nominations like we would have loved to. Taylor Swift was nominated twice in the Album of the Year category — once for her album “evermore” and again for being a writer on Olivia Rodrigo’s album “Sour.” But yesterday, Taylor’s nomination for “Sour” was taken back. Here’s what happened…..Taylor, Jack Antonoff and St. Vincent were credited retroactively as writers because Olivia had interpolated Taylor’s song “Cruel Summer” for her song “Déja Vu.” What is interpolating, you ask? According to Dictionary.com, it means “to introduce (something additional or extraneous) between other things or parts” and “to alter (a text) by the insertion of new matter, especially deceptively or without authorization.” Remember, Taylor and the rest were added as songwriters AFTER the fact, so it sounds like a little wrist slap for Olivia, who sampled Taylor’s “Cruel Summer.” Anyway, the Grammys traditionally do no nominate songwriters of interpolated songs. Once they realized their mistake, they corrected it.
Easy come, easy go! The recording Academy removed Taylor Swift, Jack Antonoff, and St. Vincent from Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Sour’ Album of the Year Grammy nomination, citing a technicality. https://t.co/OdaTmNeVLU— Entertainment Weekly (@EW) December 6, 2021
Tom Holland is busy promoting “Spider-Man: No Way Home” but once that’s out of the way, he’s going to be heading straight to the dance studio. Oscar-nominated producer Amy Pascal recently told GQ that she’s making a movie about the life of Fred Astaire and wanted Tom to play Fred. And he is! He told reporters this weekend that the script came in and he hasn’t read it yet, but he’s definitely doing it. If you didn’t know, Tom can dance! He began his acting career on the London stage, playing the title role in “Billy Elliot the Musical.” And back in 2017, Tom was on “Lip Sync Battle” — going up against Zendaya performing as Bruno Mars! — and danced his little booty off in a mashup of Gene Kelly’s “Singin’ in the Rain” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”
Fortnite fans got a big surprise! Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the voice — and the face! — of The Foundation in the conclusion to “Fortnite Chapter Two.” The Foundation is the leader of The Seven, an organization dedicated to keeping the Imagined Order (IO) from abusing the nexus of all reality in Fortnite. I don’t know what any of that means. But Dwayne tweeted a picture of his character, complete with the raised eyebrow, and captioned it, “We flipped the island. Now it’s time to take down the Imagined Order #FortniteFlipped.” Fortnite was down for several days as Epic prepared for Chapter Three. And the new map was revealed once enough people used the hashtag #FortniteFlipped. Again, I don’t know what any of that means. I’m just repeating what I read on JustJared.com.
Tristan Thompson is a cheater. But he took months to convince Khloe Kardashian that he was a reformed cheater and it turns out, he’s a big fat lying cheater who now has a THIRD child. During quarantine, Khloe and Tristan’s relationship seemed to have worked things out. In fact, she showered him with praise and threw him a big party for his 30th birthday in March. But then Tristan went to Houston where he hooked up with a personal trainer named Maralee Nichols, who gave birth last Thursday to a baby she claims belongs to Tristan. She filed a lawsuit against Tristan and then moved to LA a couple months ago to have the baby there. She’s suing him for reimbursement of medical expenses, pregnancy-related costs and child support. In her lawsuit, Maralee submitted text messages between her and Tristan where he allegedly offers her $75K to get an abortion and keep her mouth shut. He also allegedly told her that he’s retiring after this season and won’t have the income she’s expecting to cover child support. On top of that, Tristan said he has no plans to be involved in this child’s life. Now that the baby is here, Tristan is demanding a paternity test. He would also like to have the case moved from California back to Texas, which is where the child was conceived. That could affect the amount of child support he has to pay if, in fact, he is the father.
